Hello All! We have finally arrived at the point in time when we actually install and use Barman the PostgreSQL server backup and restore utility. All my usual caveats apply here about testing and believing the documentation and testing some more.
I do have to start here with a brief apology: I could not get the latest version, 2.4, working in time for me to write this article so I had to fall back to the version that came with my Linux distribution, 1.5.1. I know that is a healthy difference so I will try to address this at some point in the future. Again, I am very sorry.
In spite of my apology, I do feel like this column should at least give you a taste for the power and advantages of using a tool like Barman. Some of those advantages include, but are not limited to:
- A centralized repository for your backups
- The ability to control those backups from a single spot
- Perform PITR (Point-In-Time-Recovery) more easily from a single spot
