Excerpt: Working out the correct balance between backwards compatibility and forward momentum is incredibly difficult. Microsoft is renowned for taking this to the extreme, supporting old (and sometimes ancient) software as much as possible. Apple takes a different approach, switching technologies much more frequently, and breaking compatibility as a result. The most recent example of this is the dropping of support for 32-bit applications in macOS 10.15, which has caused a fair bit of controversy.
