As I write this, Apple Intelligence—Apple's version of "AI"—has officially hit the market. Or should I say, the first dribs and drabs of Apple Intelligence. Beginning with a few basic Writing Tools and a photo retouching feature called Clean Up, Apple Intelligence is starting to actually ship.
Even if you find these new tools useful, it's impossible to say whether AI is a success or not. It has potential, but there's a downside, and it may not play out as we hope. (It almost certainly won't. Technology has an ability to surprise us. Though their basic concepts weren't new, no one predicted social media a la Facebook or even the iPhone, or their influence on the world. AI could be even more significant.)
Next year promises even more integration of AI into our lives. It's going to be fascinating to see what changes. While I'm optimistic that things will work out, I do have some cautionary tales about the rush to make everything work with AI (see "Beware of Intelligence" in this issue).
In This Issue
I test out Xojo's new preemptive threads that finally allow true multitasking in your apps, Eugene explores detecting temperature with your Raspberry Pi, and Tim starts a new series, "The Business of Xojo," where he will write about business-related aspects of software development. In this first article, he discusses writing a mobile app development proposal.
In our columns, Tim interviews Xojo's own Alyssa Foley, Paul writes more about Xojo gaming, Stefanie shows how to embed a vCard into a QR code, and I write more about using ChatGPT to proofread articles. Enjoy!
